The Asian Association on Remote Sensing(AARS)






Name of the association:
The Asian Association on Remote Sensing

Established in 1981

According to the statutes of the AARS,
"Realizing the importance of remote sensing technology in national development activities, representatives of Asian countries present in Costa Rica at the International Symposium on Remote Sensing in April 1980, met and exchanges ideas on forming an association on remote sensing in Asia. In the spirit of mutual cooperation, the First Asian Conference on Remote Sensing was held in Bangkok, Thailand in November, 1980 and the Second Conference in Beijing, China in October - November 1981. At the Beijing Conference the representatives of the Asian countries met and decided to form an association."

Aims
According to the Article 2 of the statutes of the AARS,
"The Association is for the promotion of remote sensing through the exchange of information, mutual cooperation, international understanding and goodwill amongst the members."

Office
According to the Article 3 of the statutes of the AARS,
"The office of the Association shall be the place of domicile of the General Secretary."

Activities
According to the Article 4 of the statutes of the AARS,
"The principal activity of the Association shall be to hold the Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS). The Association may also conduct other remote sensing activities consistent with its aims.
According to the Article 8 of the statutes of the AARS,
"ACRS shall be held each year within the period from October to December except a special case which is approved by the General Conference."
The host countries of the ACRS are:
Thailand(1980), China(1981), Bangladesh(1982), Sri Lanka(1983), Nepal(1984), India(1985), Korea(1986), Indonesia(1987), Thailand(1988), Malaysia(1989), China(1990), Singapore(1991), Mongolia(1992), Iran(1993), India(1994), Thailand(1995), Sri Lanka(1996), Malaysia(1997), Philippines(1998), Hong Kong(1999)

Membership
According to the Article 6 of the statutes of the AARS, there are three types of memberships.
a. Ordinary Members
Any Asian country or region including near Asian country interested in remote sensing may apply to join the association as an ordinary member. There shall be only one membership for each country or region.
b. Associate Members
Any non-Asian country or organization interested in the Association may join the Association as an associate member.
c. Sustaining Member
Any organization interested in the Association may apply to join the association as a sustaining member.
